Kintyre Market
Kintyre inspired one of Paul McCartney’s biggest hits and take a tip from the former Beatle; he can have his choice of homes around the globe and one of his favourites is in Kintyre.
Campbeltown, ‘the wee toon’ has a great legacy from its boom days of herring fishing and the time when it could boast more than 30 distilleries. Those canny Campbeltonians put their money in bricks and mortar and the more generous even donated splendid public buildings. The wealth ploughed back into the town has given it a collection of Victorian and Edwardian tenements, shops and homes many by leading Scottish architects of the day, which is recognised by its large conservation area. Not that Campbeltown is stuck in the past, for sitting proudly on Kinloch Green is Aqualibrium, the new swimming pool, leisure centre and library which has brought a host of architectural awards to Argyll and Bute.
The drive down the A83 along the west coast of the Kintyre peninsula is one of the finest scenic routes in Europe, passing through small, friendly villages like Tayinloan, Bellochantuy and Clachan. The landscape is big, with rolling hills and rolling breakers on the shore making Westport beach a must for surfers.
South, you’ve the magnificent Mull of Kintyre and Southend with views across to Ireland and on the east coast Peninver, Saddell and Carradale all vibrant friendly communities with sea views that have to be seen to be believed. Carradale in autumn with the leaves turning gold is magical. Add a world-famous golf course at Machrihanish, another currently being built, schedules flights to Glasgow from Campbeltown Airport and you have more than enough reason to think about relocation to Kintyre, for work or play
